What’s Lipo battery?

Lipo battery, its full name is Lithium Polymer battery. A LiPo battery produce energy to power all of the electronics, and motors on your drone. LiPo batteries are based on Lithium Polymer chemistry (we usually call it LiPo) which allow these batteries to have a very high energy density compared to other types of batteries. A battery with a higher energy density will be able to hold more energy compared to another battery of the same weight which is why LiPo batteries are commonly used with R/C aircraft and drones.

There are other types of batteries such as nickel cadmium (NiCad) or nickel–metal hydride (NiMH), however these are seen as older battery technology and are not really used anymore because they are very heavy and dont hold much energy compared to LiPos.


A LiPo battery is constructed from individual cells, where each cell consists of some metal and chemicals packaged together to generate an electrical charge. By connecting these cells together in various ways we are able to make different LiPo batteries with various voltages, and capacities. More on that later on

Whats the parameters mean of lipo battery?

When you bought a lipo battery from the store, you can see there are some Parameters on your lipo battery, do you know what’s your lipo battery parameters’ mean?Here we will teach you know the mean of your Lipo battery parameters. This will help you to know what you are buying and how to choose the correct LiPo for your application. For example, there is a Gens Ace 2200mAh 11.1V 25C 3S1P Lipo battery.

As we know , the Lipo battery parameters include capacity, voltage, cells and discharge rate. Now let’s talk you what’s the mean of them.

Number of cells

Determines how many volts the battery will have. 3.7V (nominal) per cell. 1, 2 or 3 cell (or 11.1V) is the most common in beginner planes. Like this Gens Ace 2200mAh 3s 25C lipo battery, it is a 3 cell lipo battery, another way, we can call it 3s lipo battery. Because 1 cell=1S=3.7V, so 3 cell=3S=11.1V, it is also a 2200mAh 11.1V lipo battery.


This is the same as cells. Each cell in your LiPo battery has a nominal voltage of 3.7V. However when you use the battery the voltage will drop down, but it is important not to let this minimum voltage drop below 3.0V. Similarly you must ensure that the maximum voltage for a lipo cell is 4.2V. If the voltage of any cell in your Lipo battery goes beyond this range you can cause the chemicals to become unstable which can cause a fire  so for this reason Lipo battery chargers are designed to ensure you only charge each cell to 4.2V. Similarly most ESC’s have a cut off voltage which turns off the motor when the voltage of your battery gets low to avoid discharging it too much.Some multi-rotor ESC’s have this feature disabled as a motor suddenly turning off would result in your drone crashing. However most multi-rotor flight controllers have a way to monitor the battery voltage and warn you before it gets too low.


How much energy that is stored in the battery. Usually written in milliampere hours or mAh for short.

Milli means a 1000th of. So a 2000mAh battery is the same as a 2Ah battery

If you draw 2 Ampere through that battery it is going to last for 1 hour.

If you draw 1 Ampere it’s going to last 2 hours

If you draw 4 Ampere it’s going to last ½ hour or 30 minutes or 1800 seconds

C Rating

Is how much power the battery delivers without dropping too much in voltage

How many Ampere it can deliver is dependent on the capacity of the battery

To calculate how much it can deliver you take the C rating and multiply it by the capacity rating

If you have a 1000 mAh battery and a 20 C rating that is 20 times 1 which is 20 ampere.

There are normally 2 different C ratings. One for continuous discharge and one for burst, which means how much it can deliver for a very short time (10 seconds)
