WarLark 80 Micro FPV drone

The Warlark comes packed with features for a micro brushed quad, like OSD and Cleanflight. It generally flies well in the house, although it is a little bit twitchy and the VTX is prone to overheating if you don’t start flying within a couple of minutes (I sat around adjusting the OSD for a while and learned the hard way that the VTX overheats without air flow, and then shuts down the whole quad).

Specifications

WarLark 80 Micro Quad

Wheelbase: 80mm

Weight: 36.6g (with battery but without canopy), 38g (with battery)

Flight controller: Scisky Micro F3 Brushed FC+ receiver +VTX 25MW +Camera

Firmware version: Cleanflight 1.3.0

Motor: 0716 Brushed Motor

Prop Size: 35mm 4-blade prop

Battery: 250mAh~300mAh 3.7V (Recommend Tattu 3.7V Lipo battery)

Receiver: Built-in Frsky compatible 8ch SBUS receiver/ Flysky receiver/ DSMX/DSM2 receiver/Futaba SFHSS

OSD: VTX comes with an OSD

Camera: 600TVL HD CMOS 1/4 inch Camera

AV Wireless Transmitter: 5.8g 25mw 40CH

Flight time: 5 minutes

And next let me have a detailed introduction about WarLark 80 Micro Quad.

Frame

The frame is very durable, well made and designed with one major exception. The USB port is positioned very close to and right behind one of the frame members. This prevents a USB plug from lining up with it sufficiently to plug in. The only way I was able to get mine to plug in was to actually flex the frame a bit. That worked, but when you let the frame relax, it places upward tension on the plug which is transferred to the port on the board. In retrospect I should have shaved a little of the housing of the plug I was using. The frame member cannot be moved down as it would interfere with the placement of the battery.

WarLark 80 Micro FPV Quad

Motors

This machine comes with 0716 Brushed Motors installed. So far they have been reliable and are adequate for the job. These motors plug into the FC so you don’t have to solder them. I have not (yet) seen replacement motors so I can only assume they are shipped with connectors already soldered to the wires.

Camera

This camera is somewhat proprietary in nature. The camera PCB is constructed with small “ears” on each corner so that it will fit into the mounting system (which is adjustable). The bottom two ears fit into slots in a piece that screws to the bottom of the two front ducts. By loosening these two screws the holder can be moved down and the camera rotated to any of five positions for optimum viewing angle.

Battery

Mine was supplied with a 1S 300mAh 35C battery, and I recommend Tattu 3.7V Lipo battery. The battery comes down hot. Even during “mild” flying, the battery is very very warm. It also appears to be puffed slightly after each flight. Some of this may be “normal” just because of the high current drain from such a small battery.

WarLark 80 Micro FPV Quad battery

This is a very good little flyer. The frame is strong and it’s very stable and forgiving.

Overall, even with all the little issues, this is a lot of fun to fly. However, given the issues with the camera, and the frame, I am not sure I could recommend this quad.

How to start a ImmersionRC Vortex 250

This is a guide about how to start a ImmersionRC Vortex 250, I will walk you through the initial setup process for your vortex 250 pro FPV quadcopter. It is supposed to be used alongside the main vortex 250 manual. If you have any questions about it, you can leave your question on my blog and I will reply you in the first. Next let me begin this guide.

What else do I need to fly the vortex?

The vortex 250 arrives fully assembled but you need to add your own battery and R/C receiver in order to be able to fly your quadcopter. A FPV camera and transmitter are also built into the vortex, but you will also need to use some FPV goggles, or FPV monitor to fly this drone in first person view. However here are our suggestions on the extra equipment needed for the vortex 250.

Battery– The vortex can pull of 80A during full power climbs so regular batteries are not suitable, you can use either a 3S or a 4S setup depending on your experiance. Just make sure the battry can supply suffienct current to the motors, so a 60C plus battery should be used.

3S Setup – Tattu 1300mAh 3S 75C

4S Setup – Tattu 1300mAh 4S 75C

R/C Radio and Receiver– FRsky Taranis Plus with X4R-SB (preferably bind in CPPM mode)368 or D4R-ii receiver.

FPV Goggles– Fatshark Attitude V3130 or Fatshark Dominator v3

First time setup

In this video you will go through the entire setup process of setting up your Vortex 250 Pro for the first time using a FRsky Taranis and a D4R-II receiver. The first step it to bind your receiver to your taranis and set your D4R/X4R to output CPPM, this is so that you dont need to modify the included R/C receiver cable on the vortex. In the case of the X4R-SB receiver you should bind it with the jumper across CH2 and CH3.

The video also shows you how to setup a model on your taranis radio for the vortex. In the case of you using the D4R-ii you will need to set the taranis to D8 mode, but if using the X4R receiver (if using EU firmware on your taranis) set it to D16 mode.

Setting up the vortex with Spektrum DX18

Advanced setup

In this video Freybott walks us through some of the advanced settings and pro tuning setups available on the vortex 250 pro. He shows us how this can all be done via the R/C controls and the OSD menu. Settings include setting us the OSD, LED’s, Video TX, Game Setup, Flight Controll, and Pro-tuning.

Using SBUS/Spektrum with Vortex 250

By default the vortex 250 includes a CPPM cable to connect to your receiver, so that is why I suggested you bind your X4R-SB receiver in CPPM mode. However if you want to use SBUS/Spektrum you will need to open the vortex up and install the Vortex Spekrum cable. For full details see the official vortex 250 quick start guide. This involves removing 10 screws on the top of the frame so that you can access the flight controller board to plug in the SBUS cable.

Get a good Lipo battery before Start a Drone Racing

If you want to start a drone racing, you need to prepare too many things, the first step you must prepare to a good racing drone,  what’s the best drone? how to choose a drone for yourself? You can go and visit this blog: http://rcfpvplane.com/; there are many tips and advice for rc drone and FPV, you can get much useful infomation this blog.(Recommend drone pilots read this article What do you need to get before Start a Drone Racing)

Ok next you need to prepare the following things:

  • A Controller,
  • Video Goggles,
  • Video Receiver And Antennas,
  • Lots Of Lipo Batteries,
  • A Good Charger

I don’t want to introduce more about Controller, Video Goggles, Video Receiver And Antennas and Charger, you can get more info from that’s blog, I will introduce more about Lipo batteries.

Lipo batteries

Even if you buy a pre-built drone like the Vortex 250 Pro or Vendetta, racing drones like these don’t come with batteries. I won’t go into all the specifics on how to pick a good LIPO Battery in this article, but just know that the most common battery for a racing drone is 14.8v 1300mah 60C. A battery with specifications like this will give you the best power-to-weight ratio for the drones we recommend and the higher C rating means that it will handle higher currents and last longer than a battery with a lower C rating. I recommend Tattu 1300mAh 4S 75CLipo battery and Tattu Rline 1300mAh 4S 75C Lipo battery.

Get at least two or three batteries to start with, since flight time on a racing drone is very limited and you’ll need as much practice as you can get. You can buy even more batteries in the future, but if you have more than just two or three, you’ll need to look into Parallel charging so you don’t spend 10 hours trying to charge all of them. One thing you should buy (no matter what battery you get) is a voltage checker. LIPO batteries do not like being over discharged and can even break if discharged too much. It doesn’t really matter what kind of LIPO checker you get, but the Gens Ace & Tattu LIPO to USB voltage checker is nice because it can also turn your battery into a Phone charger!

If you want to buy a good Lipo battery, I recommend you can choose Gens Ace & Tattu:

Better tan the box is the small plastic clam shell case you get with the drone. This will be useful, keep it. Great to store your drone in when you toss it into your back pack or pocket. (Yes the S6 is THAT SMALL!)

Controller = Your Phone!

I left the program unconnected for this picture so you could get a good idea of what the controller layout is like. As a person who has been flying RC with real radios for years I was a bit skeptical on how I would be able to fly the S6 using my phone. But In all honesty after a flight or two you can almost “feel” the sticks. It’s weird, but the system works for this size of drone.

You will also notice that on the left are all your camera settings and on the right are all your drone settings including POI and Follow me (The robot head)

These are the claimed Wingsland S6 Intelligent Functions:

Automatically Following, Camera control , Forward/backward, FPV, Gravity Sense Control, Low-voltage Protection, One Key Automatic Return, One Key Landing, One Key Taking Off, Point of Interest, Selfie, Turn left/right, Up/down, Voice control, WiFi Connection.

NOTE: to access most settings you need to hide the gimbal screen by tapping the little radio signal. Kind of weird to not have sticks available as the drone is flying when you want to change a setting. But You get used to that as well!

Let’s go over all the functions.

Turn left/right, Up/down – This works well. The drone flys very nice. In fact the GPS hold and flying characteristics are quite impressive.

FPV – You can technically fly the S6 FPV style, but that would be looking at the screen underneath your thumbs as you try to fly, so I’m going to say this is more of a “claim” than a reality.

Gravity Sense Control – I think this means the sensors on the bottom of the S6. If so, they work great! The S6 definatly knows where it is in relation to the earth. Quite impressive.

One Key Taking Off,One Key Landing – works as described!

One Key Automatic Return (Return to Home) – Works extremely well. During my test the drone landed about 6 inches from where it took off!

Camera control – You have the ability to change camera settings while flying. Turn on and off EIS and change frame rates, white balance etc. Works well. (EIS not so much) More on EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization). You must have 1080p 30 fps selected. And on the ground it seems to work, but in the air, if you have anything but perfectly smooth air and are able to fly VERY smoothly, the video footage is basically useless. It shows every bobble and bounce the S6 makes. That being said, the camera’s quality is very nice, and still pics are quite the treat.

Point of Interest – This function works extremely well. When you enter POI, the drone starts to circle the spot you identified as your POI. You can still control height and if you pull back on the “stick” the S6 will make the circle bigger. This is probably the most useful feature as you could enter POI let the drone circle you and just snap stills and get an awesome group of stills that could be used to make a 360 pano shot.

Automatically Following – I never got “Follow me” to work. And I tried many times. I told Wingsland this and they suggested that I make sure I had the latest APP version. I did and still it would not work. It would enter the follow me mode and say “connecting” and then return a screen that said “Conditions not right to enter mode”. I live near the city and it is very wifi dense so I thought that may be the reason. Then I took the S6 to a park in a more rural area, and got the same message. I may have done something wrong, but I simply could not get this feature to work.

Low-voltage Protection – This sounds like a great idea, and the S6 did let me know when it was at 20% battery life. Unfortunately at 10% batt life, the drone started to auto descend from about 30 feet, and when it got to around 12 feet, it just shut off and dropped to the ground. Granted it was COLD. Like 20 deg F cold. And it dropped into the snow which left the drone in perfect condition, but still. Be aware that 10% batt in cold weather means LAND NOW.

Flight Time – I had seen the claims of 8 – 10 minute flight times. I know I was flying in cold weather but I was only able to achieve 4 – 5 minute flights with most averaging 4.5 minutes. Cold can accommodate for a 15-20% loss in a lipo pack, and this batt is small, so I expect the flight time in warm weather to be around 6 minutes.

Course Lock and Home Lock Modes:

I hate these modes and think if you can’t actually fly a drone you shouldn’t so yes they work, but I hate them. (Honesty it hurts some times)

Video – The actual camera in the S6 is pretty nice! Very “GoPro-ish” in color saturation and sharpness. With 4K video and 13 MP still capabilities the drone promises nice images! And for Stills I say YES! But again for video, even with the EIS turned on, the results were disappointing. The ONLY way I think you could make the video better is if you used the S6 as a floating tripod, and had run the video as the s^ stays stationary. This I am sure would produce decent results.

(See examples in my re-cap video below)

Stills – At first no matter how I tried I could not get the s6 to take a still shot. I would hit the button and nothing happened. Then after I updated the App on my iPhone, it allowed me to take shots. And they were pretty good! Plan on taking 3 stills to get one awesome one as if the S6 gets tossed by the wind the pic will be blurred!

Gadgets: I did not receive the gadgets, but apparently you can add a search light, a small ball gun or an emoji broadcaster. My thought son these… NO.. for the love of all things drone.. NO. Do not sell these or promote them. THANKS!

FINAL THOUGHTS

As a professional Aerial Videographer the Wingsland S6 is not for me. It’s a fun toy, but I could not find usefulness in my normal life. The compact nature of the unit is pretty bad ass though. If they could step up the camera to include a tiny gimbal I might like this a whole lot more. That being said for the price ($399 us on http://www.genstattu.com/wingsland-s6.html) I think you get a lot for your money. And when Wingsland updates the firmware, removes a few bugs, this could be a fun toy drone that will open the world of drones up to many people!

Here’s the video re-cap! Enjoy!

Introduction of Lipo battery

What is Lipo battery? When I first time to hear this name, I didn’t know what’s that? I can’t find its difference between other batteries. And later I search it from Google, and I have looked up the Lipo battery information, I have knew more about it. The “Li-po” full name is Lithium Polymer batteries, they are a newer type of battery and used in radio control industries, like drones, UAVs, rc car, rc helicopter and some other RCs. They have been more and more popular over the last few years, and they can offer enough power to RC hobbies.

lipo-battery

As we know, in the past, we also used NiMH batteries and Nickel-Cadmium batteries, but why does Lipo battery get more and more popular? I think we should know about the difference between Lipo batteries and NiMH batteries.

Lipo batteries advantages:

  • Lighter weight
  • Higher capacities
  • Higher discharge

Not only these, Lipo battery can be made in almost any size or shape, and higher capacity can hold more power, your drones can fly longer, higher discharge can power your drone higher speed, it is very important for FPV racing or rc car racing.

Lido battery drawbacks

  • Shorter lifespan
  • Flammable
  • Hard to care
  • Expensive

Though Lipo battery have many advantages to NiMH batteries, but their lifespan is shorter than NiMH, and they are not safe, the sensitive chemistry of the batteries can lead to fire if the battery gets punctured and vents into the air. LiPo batteries need special care in the way they are charged, discharged, and stored. The required equipment can be expensive.

What are these numbers of Lipo batteries means?

When we get one Lipo batteries or search the Lipo batteries on the GensTattu.com, we can see there are some numbers on the Lipo batteries, for example, there is one Lipo battery from gesntattu.com, and we can see there are some numbers on this battery, and next let’s talk about these numbers mean. This is a Tattu 1300mAh 4S 75C Lipo battery.

The 1300mAh is the capacity of this Lipo battery, 4S is the battery’s voltage, 75C means the discharge rate.

Voltage

A LiPo cell has a nominal voltage of 3.7V, and a lipo cell = 1 cell = 1S = 3.7V. For the 14.8V battery above, that means that there are four cells in series (which means the voltage gets added together). This is sometimes why you will hear people talk about a “4S” battery pack – it means that there are 4 cells in Series. So a four-cell (4S) pack is 14.8V, a three-cell (3S) pack is 11.1V, and so on.

The voltage of a Lipo battery pack is essentially going to determine how fast your vehicle is going to go. Voltage directly influences the RPM of the electric motor (brushless motors are rated by kV, which means ‘RPM per Volt’). So if you have a brushless motor with a rating of 3,500kV, that motor will spin 3,500 RPM for every volt you apply to it. On a 2S LiPo battery, that motor will spin around 25,900 RPM. On a 3S, it will spin a whopping 38,850 RPM. So the more voltage you have, the faster you’re going to go.

Capacity

The capacity of a battery is basically a measure of how much power the battery can hold. Think of it as the size of your fuel tank. The unit of measure here is milliamp hours (mAh). This is saying how much drain can be put on the battery to discharge it in one hour. Since we usually discuss the drain of a motor system in amps (A), here is the conversion:

1000mAh = 1 Amp Hour (1Ah)

I said that the capacity of the battery is like the fuel tank – which means the capacity determines how long you can run before you have to recharge. The higher the number, the longer the run time. Airplanes and helicopters don’t really have a standard capacity, because they come in many different sizes, but for R/C cars and trucks, the average is 5000mAh – that is our most popular battery here in the store. But there are companies that make batteries with larger capacities. GensAce & Tattu even has one that is over 22000mAh! That’s huge, but there is a downside to large capacities as well. The bigger the capacity, the bigger the physical size and weight of the battery. Another consideration is heat build up in the motor and speed control over such a long run. Unless periodically checked, you can easily burn up a motor if it isn’t given enough time to cool down, and most people don’t stop during a run to check their motor temps. Keep that in mind when picking up a battery with a large capacity.

Discharge Rating (“C” Rating)

The C Rating is simply a measure of how fast the battery can be discharged safely and without harming the battery. One of the things that makes it complicated is that it’s not a stand-alone number; it requires you to also know the capacity of the battery to ultimately figure out the safe amp draw (the “C” in C Rating actually stands for Capacity). Once you know the capacity, it’s pretty much a plug-and-play math problem. Using the above battery, here’s the way you find out the maximum safe continuous amp draw:

75C = 75 x Capacity (in Amps)

Calculating the C-Rating of our example battery: 75 x 1.3 = 97.5A

The resulting number is the maximum sustained load you can safely put on the battery. Going higher than that will result in, at best, the degradation of the battery at a faster than normal pace. At worst, it could burst into flames. So our example battery can handle a maximum continuous load of 97.5A.

How to care Lipo batteries?

I have talked that Lipo batteries are hard to care and not very safe, so we should know more knowledge about how to care Lipo batteries. These are long guides, if you are interesting in these, you can read this Lipo Battery Warning to know how to charge/discharging, storage and some others about care  Lipo batteries.

Where to buy Lipo batteries?

Lipo batteries are also used to drones, RC cars, FPV and some other RC industries, if you want to buy one or more Lipo batteries, you can buy batteries online, it is a easy and useful way, and you’d better chose a right brand, because Poor quality Lipo batteries are not very safe, they maybe destroy your machine or hurt you, so a high quality and brand Lipo battery is very important. If you are a RC hobby or drone, FPV lovers, I recommend you can buy batteries on the www.genstattu.com , their batteries are high quality and safe, you can have a try.
